Hope is in God Himself
The first thing to settle about hope is where it points. Most disappointment comes from hoping in things that were never able to carry the weight, an outcome or a person. Scripture keeps redirecting hope to its only secure object, which is God Himself. The psalmist asks his own downcast soul why it is in despair and answers with a command: hope in God. He does not pin his hope to better circumstances, but to God, who remains constant no matter what the circumstances do. When hope is fixed there, it stops swinging with every change in the news. Try naming, honestly, what you have been hoping in lately, and move that hope back onto God, the only secure place for it.
For thou art my hope, O Lord Jehovah: Thou art my trust from my youth.
Psalm 71:5 · ASVThe psalmist addresses God directly as his hope and his trust since youth. Hope here is not a mood but a lifelong reliance on God Himself.
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise him For the help of his countenance.
Psalm 42:5 · ASVThe psalmist questions his own downcast soul and commands it to hope in God. He preaches to himself, directing his despair back toward God as its remedy.
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13 · ASVPaul calls God the God of hope and prays He would fill believers with joy and peace in believing. Hope is presented as something God Himself supplies by His Spirit.
Behold, the eye of Jehovah is upon them that fear him, Upon them that hope in his lovingkindness.
Psalm 33:18 · ASVThe psalm says God's eye is on those who fear Him and hope in His lovingkindness. God's attention is linked to those whose hope rests in His steadfast love.
