The Spirit gives life
The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead is given to His people, and Scripture does not treat that as a figure of speech. Paul says the Spirit who raised Christ will also give life to mortal bodies, and Jesus told His followers they would receive power when the Spirit came on them. The power is not for spectacle but for living a life that would otherwise be beyond reach, the strength to forgive and to endure when it costs. Where human resolve runs out, the Spirit supplies what is needed. The Christian life was never meant to run on natural strength alone. Ask the Spirit for the power He gives, and lean on it where your own effort falls short.
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall give life also to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Romans 8:11 · ASVPaul says the Spirit of the One who raised Jesus lives in believers and will also give life to their mortal bodies. Resurrection power is tied to the Spirit's presence in God's people.
But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Acts 1:8 · ASVJesus tells the disciples they will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on them, to be His witnesses. The Spirit is given as the source of power for their mission.
who also made us sufficient as ministers of a new covenant; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
2 Corinthians 3:6 · ASVPaul says the letter kills but the Spirit gives life, contrasting the old written code with the new work of the Spirit. Life, not mere rules, is what the Spirit brings.
And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep mine ordinances, and do them.
Ezekiel 36:27 · ASVGod promises through Ezekiel to put His Spirit within His people and cause them to walk in His ways. Obedience is presented as something the indwelling Spirit makes possible.
