The Spirit helps you
Jesus called the Spirit the Comforter, a word that also carries the sense of a helper called alongside to give aid. He gave this name on the night before His death, promising the disciples they would not be left as orphans once He was gone. The Spirit takes up that role now, helping in the places where human strength gives out and reminding the mind of what Jesus said. This is practical, not mystical. When direction is missing or the truth is hard to recall, the Helper is the one who steps in. The Christian is not asked to white-knuckle the faith alone, because the same Helper Jesus promised His first followers is given to His people still.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever.
John 14:16 · ASVJesus promises the Father will give another Comforter to be with the disciples forever. The word for Comforter means one called alongside to help, a permanent counterpart to Jesus' bodily presence.
But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.
John 14:26 · ASVJesus says the Holy Spirit will teach the disciples all things and remind them of His words. The Spirit's work here is tied to recalling and illuminating what Jesus taught.
Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you.
John 16:7 · ASVJesus tells the disciples it is to their advantage that He go away, so the Comforter can come. His departure is presented as the condition for the Spirit being sent.
So the church throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria had peace, being edified; and, walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, was multiplied.
Acts 9:31 · ASVLuke notes the early church grew while walking in the fear of the Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is shown strengthening and encouraging the whole community.
