What you trust besides God
Everyone leans their security on something. For most of us it is not a statue, it is a bank balance, a job title, a person, your own competence. These become idols of a kind, not because they are bad, but because we ask them to do what only God can, to make us safe. The tell is how you feel when one of them is threatened. If losing it would unravel you, it has more of your trust than you realized. Notice where your sense of security rests, and move some of that weight back onto God. The things you trust instead of Him were always going to be unreliable, and He is the only foundation that does not move.
With God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
Psalm 62:7 · ASVDavid locates his salvation, strength, and refuge in God, not in himself or his circumstances. He puts the full weight of his security on the one Rock that does not move.
Blessed is the man that trusteth in Jehovah, and whose trust Jehovah is.
Jeremiah 17:7 · ASVJeremiah says the person whose trust is in Jehovah flourishes, and makes God Himself the object of that trust. The placement of trust is what the verse turns on.
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will make mention of the name of Jehovah our God.
Psalm 20:7 · ASVThe psalm contrasts trusting in chariots and horses with trusting in the name of Jehovah. Military strength stands for any human resource people lean on instead of God.
Trust ye in Jehovah for ever; for in Jehovah, even Jehovah, is an everlasting rock.
Isaiah 26:4 · ASVIsaiah urges trust in Jehovah forever, calling Him an everlasting rock. The image stresses permanence, a foundation that does not wear away with time.
