Verse Meaning

Romans 10:9 Meaning

because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Romans 10:9 (ASV)

Paul gives one of the plainest pictures of how salvation comes: say with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. It pulls together the mouth and the heart, the thing you say out loud and the thing you trust down underneath.

The point Paul is pressing is that salvation sits near you, close at hand, within reach of anyone who believes and confesses, with no special standing required.

So if you have ever wondered what it takes to be saved, the verse lays it right out. It rests on trusting the risen Jesus and being willing to call Him Lord, set close enough for an ordinary person to take hold of.
