Psalm 119:105 Meaning

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And light unto my path.

Psalm 119:105 (ASV)

The psalmist holds God's word up as a lamp and a light. Back before streetlights, a little lamp threw just enough glow to show you the ground right under your feet and a step or two beyond. That is the picture he is painting. Scripture gives you the light you need for the step in front of you.

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, and the whole sprawling thing is taken up with praising God's word. This verse says why it is worth all that praise: it guides a real life, one step at a time.

You probably wish you could see the whole path laid out at once. What this verse hands you is the lamp for the next step, which is the part you have to walk. Read Scripture for the light on the ground right ahead of you, and take that step.
