Trust in Jehovah with all thy heart, And lean not upon thine own understanding: In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he will direct thy paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (ASV)
The verse puts your own understanding next to trusting God, and tells you which one to lean your weight on. Your understanding still has its uses. The warning is about resting your whole self on it as if it were enough. Bring God into everything you do, and He will keep your path straight.
Proverbs is practical wisdom, a lot of it written like a father talking to his son. This is meant for the real decisions where the road bends out of sight and you have to choose anyway.
So trusting God here still has you thinking it through. What changes is that your own read on things stops being the last word, and God gets a say in the decision. What He promises back is a path kept straight as you walk it, a step at a time.
