Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:6 (ASV)
Jesus makes a startling claim about Himself here. He could have said He points to the way or teaches the truth. What He says instead is that He is the way, He is the truth, He is the life, and that He is how a person comes to the Father. He puts Himself in the place you would expect a road or a teaching to be.
He says it the night before He dies, comforting disciples who were coming apart at the thought of losing Him. Thomas had just asked how they were supposed to know the way. Jesus answers him by handing over Himself. The way to the Father turns out to be a person standing in the room.
This is about the boldest thing Jesus ever said, and the whole Christian faith hangs on whether it is true. Coming to God runs straight through Jesus, the one who looked at His friends and called Himself the way.
