But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Isaiah 53:5 (ASV)
Isaiah describes a servant who suffers in the place of other people. He is wounded for their wrongs and crushed for their sins, and what His suffering buys them is peace and healing. It is the picture of one man taking on what everyone around Him had coming.
Isaiah wrote this hundreds of years before Jesus, and Christians read it as a straight description of the cross. The wounds, the bruising, the punishment landing on Him so that others come out whole, all of it points ahead to what Christ would do.
This is why the cross is good news. Jesus carried what would have buried you, and the healing Isaiah names reaches the deepest place in you, where you most need it.
