Verse Meaning

2 Timothy 1:7 Meaning

For God gave us not a spirit of fearfulness; but of power and love and discipline.

2 Timothy 1:7 (ASV)

Paul tells Timothy what God put in him, and it is power and love and a disciplined mind. Fear is the one thing God left off that list. You will still feel afraid sometimes, and the verse knows it. What it tells you is that fear was never the spirit God handed you, so it has no standing to run your life.

Paul wrote this to a younger leader who looks to have been timid and worn down. He is nudging Timothy to step forward, and he roots that push in what God had already placed in him.

So when fear grabs the wheel, this verse reminds you what God has already given you to drive with: power, love, and a steady, disciplined mind. Those are yours to move from.
