Wherefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature: the old things are passed away; behold, they are become new.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ASV)
Paul says that anyone joined to Christ becomes a new creature. This goes deeper than cleaning yourself up or turning over a new leaf. It is being remade. The old things have gone, and something new has taken their place.
He is writing to people working out what their faith changes, and his answer holds nothing back. In Christ you are made new all the way down at the core, the old self closed out and a new one begun.
So whatever your past was, the verse hands the final word to the new creation instead of to what you used to be. If you are in Christ, the deepest true thing about you is the new life God put there.
