Paul tells you what love is by telling you what it does. Love waits a long time and stays kind. It turns away from envy, from showing off, from puffing itself up. Every item on the list is something love does, which puts love in reach of your choosing rather than leaving it to whatever you happen to feel.
People read this at weddings, but Paul wrote it to a church that was splitting itself apart and treating each other badly. It was him correcting them as much as celebrating anything, holding up a picture of how people who follow Jesus are supposed to treat one another.
So hold it up like a mirror. Put your own name in every spot where the word "love" sits, read it back slowly, and the pretty wedding lines turn into a challenge worth taking on.
