The God of hope
On a day set apart for Him, it is worth remembering that hope is finally a Person, not a forecast. Scripture calls God Himself the God of hope, and calls the one whose help and hope is in Him happy. That reframes the whole thing. Hope rests on the One who governs the future rather than on predicting how things will go. When the week ahead is uncertain, the uncertainty sits inside the larger certainty of God. Rest in this: the One you hope in made the heavens and keeps faith forever. There is no scenario in which He is not still God, and that is the floor beneath every hope worth having. Carry that settled confidence into whatever comes next.
Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in Jehovah his God.
Psalm 146:5 · ASVThe psalm calls the person happy whose help is the God of Jacob and whose hope is in Jehovah his God. Lasting blessedness is tied to hope placed in God rather than in human help.
Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me? Hope thou in God; for I shall yet praise him, Who is the help of my countenance, and my God.
Psalm 43:5 · ASVThe psalmist again commands his downcast soul to hope in God, anticipating that he will yet praise Him. The repetition shows hope as a deliberate choice made against discouragement.
Jehovah taketh pleasure in them that fear him, In those that hope in his lovingkindness.
Psalm 147:11 · ASVThe psalm says Jehovah takes pleasure in those who fear Him and hope in His lovingkindness. God's favor is connected to those whose hope rests in His steadfast love.
Be strong, and let your heart take courage, All ye that hope in Jehovah.
Psalm 31:24 · ASVDavid urges all who hope in Jehovah to be strong and let their heart take courage. Hope in God is linked with strength and courage for those who wait on Him.
