How to Memorize Scripture (and Why It Helps)

Having a few verses memorized means you carry them everywhere, into the hard moments when you cannot reach for a book. It is worth the effort, and it is easier than it sounds.

Pick one verse to start. Choose a single verse that means something to you right now and stay with it until it sticks, rather than spreading yourself across ten at once.

Say it out loud, several times. Hearing yourself helps it land faster than reading silently.

Break it into pieces. Learn the first phrase, then add the next, building up a few words at a time.

Write it out by hand. The act of writing helps lock it in.

Review it across the week. A verse you revisit for a few days sticks far better than one you cram once.

Use it. Pray it, repeat it when you wake, reach for it when you need it. A verse you use is a verse you keep.

Thy word have I laid up in my heart, That I might not sin against thee.
