When Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd, His listeners knew exactly what a shepherd did, and what made one good.
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd layeth down his life for the sheep.
John 10:11 (ASV)
The mark of the good shepherd is that he lays down his life for the sheep, putting himself between them and the threat instead of running when danger comes.
I am the good shepherd; and I know mine own, and mine own know me.
John 10:14 (ASV)
A shepherd knows his sheep one by one, so belonging to Jesus means He knows you by name, the way a shepherd knows each animal in his care.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: and I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish.
John 10:27-28 (ASV)
The sheep know His voice and follow Him, and He gives them eternal life and holds them so that no one can take them out of His hand.
To call Jesus your shepherd is to say you are kept and led by someone who already laid down His life for you, and means to hold onto you for good.
