"Be Still and Know That I Am God": What It Means

"Be still and know that I am God" shows up on mugs and wall art, often as a call to slow down. The context is bigger than that.

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

Psalm 46:10 (ASV)

The psalm around it describes nations in chaos and the earth giving way. Into that, God says be still. The word means dropping your hands and stopping the frantic effort to manage and fix everything yourself.

"Know that I am God" is the reason to stop. The stopping rests on a fact: God is God, and you are not. He stays in control of everything even on the days the world looks like it has come apart.

God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.

That is how the psalm opens, and it sets up the whole thing. You can stop striving because God is your refuge.
